Relief
Intimate struggles and rising tension, unyielding chaos and cathartic release...Relief takes on the human quest for satisfaction. -
An immersive contemporary dance-theatre experience, Relief is created by FACT/SF and produced in association with the Joe Goode Annex. Audiences will be seated in the round, and limited to 40 people per night.
Over six evenings at the Joe Goode Annex, Relief marks Slender-White's return to an abstract contemporary dance-theatre aesthetic. After producing a series of rigorously structured works for the proscenium stage (Stepset Shift, Falling, Allegretto, POv.3, Entertaining Victoria), Relief follows instinct more than order, and may be reminiscent for audiences of FACT/SF's acclaimed and much toured work, The Consumption Series (2010). Performing in front of, behind, below, above, and even on the audience, Relief brings attendees directly into the action.
From the director, Charles Slender-White, "I've lately become obsessed with the human condition in all its grandeur and all its banality. I'm hungry to explore and expose what makes us tick, what gets us up in the morning, and what devastating events (small though they often are) can completely derail the trajectory we thought we were on. Even very common days can be full of surprises and challenges, and I hope that by taking on something real and shared, Relief will be accessible to, and deeply resonant for, a pretty wide audience. Performers will flock in small groups around the space, hurl themselves against the wall and into each other, fall down, rebuild, try again. In some ways it's epic and explosive, in others it's delicate and small."
Slender-White will perform alongside FACT/SF Company Members Liane Burns, Michaela Burns, Catherine Newman, LizAnne Roman Roberts, and Amanda Whitehead. The work will feature music by Ryoji Ikeda, Junior Boys, J.S. Bach, Passion Pit, Röyksopp, and Yelle. Relief is approximately 70 minutes in-length, attendees will be offered complimentary beer and wine, and each show will be followed by a short post-performance discussion.
-- ABOUT FACT/SF
Founded by Artistic Director Charles Slender-White in 2008, FACT/SF's primary mission is to produce sophisticated and rigorous contemporary dances that encourage viewers to feel intensely, think critically, and broaden their perspectives. In pursuit of this mission we have performed 23 new works in 102 performances in 14 cities worldwide for nearly 15,000 audience members, and provided 42 artists and arts workers with jobs and opportunity. FACT/SF has received commissions from CounterPulse, Electric Works Gallery, and the Chelyabinsk Pedagogical State University in Russia. Our first large-scale work as a company, The Consumption Series, premiered in spring 2010 in San Francisco and has since been performed 25 times in eight cities for nearly 2,000 people. In 2011 we were selected for the Artist Residency Commissioning program at CounterPULSE through which we premiered the "utterly absorbing" (SF Bay Guardian) POv.3.
A banner year for FACT/SF, 2012 featured: our first international tour of eight cities across Russia under the auspices of the 'American Seasons' program conducted by the US Department of State, Charles' mentorship with extreme action choreographer Elizabeth Streb via CHIME Across Borders, and his certification as a Teacher of Countertechnique, a movement system developed by Dutch choreographer and pedagogue Anouk van Dijk. In 2013, we celebrated our fifth anniversary with the premiere of our third full-length work, Falling, at ODC Theater. "Conceptually demanding, convincingly realized" (Rita Felciano), Falling has so far been seen by over 700 people.
Throughout our history, FACT/SF has found success thanks to support from Theatre Bay Area/Dancers' Group CA$H Grants, Dancers' Group Lighting Artists in Dance Awards, the Columbia Foundation, the Trust for Mutual Understanding, the US Department of State, the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the Kenneth Rainin Foundation, ODC Theater, and numerous individual donors.
