Movement Workshop with Jessie Young: Technique Practice | Undoing, Studio Practice | Do Something
The workshop runs 2 days and has modular options (single drop in class session or full workshop)
Technique Practice | Undoing. Saturday and Sunday, 10 am - noon
Studio Practice | Do Something. Saturday 3-4:30 pm.
Technique Practice - Class will begin with practices that activate sensations of weight. We identify scales of continuous motion and spiral while re-negotiating style and aesthetic within that. We ask questions: How do we present ourself in motion? What are the perceived capacities and limitations of our body? Improvisational and choreographed exercises work interchangeably to identify momentum, where it resides and where it can be directed. Technique practice will be a place of rigorous curiosity and self-awareness; to come together, fall apart, sweat, dance.
Studio Practice - What are the stories we tell about ourselves? Is there a soundtrack to these stories? What would it be? How do we compose layers of movement between proximity and distance? Studio practice is shared practice and I will facilitate a space where we move, compose, work and discuss.
Jessie Young, dancer and choreographer, creates work inspired by theatrical expressions of everyday life--discovering moments where we are transformed by intensity of risk, irreverence and failure, unfurling possibilities and reimagined futures. Her work has been presented by FringeArts (Philadelphia), The Current Sessions (NYC), Festival International de Teatro Susan Alexander (Mexico), Fleet Move Dance Festival (Cape Cod), Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (IL), and extensively in Chicago with institutions such as Links Hall, Chicago Home Theatre Festival, Chicago Dance Crash and The Incovenience. She has performed nationally and internationally with artists including The Seldoms, Kristina Isabelle Dance Company, Khecari Dance Theatre, The Moving Architects, The Space/Movement Project, Juie Mayo, Nico Brown, Stephanie Acosta, and Erin Kilmurray. Jessie received her BFA in Modern Dance from the University of Utah and is currently an MFA candidate and teaching assistant in the Department of Dance at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
