Tucked in the deep shade of the California Oaks that line its streets is "a little bit of paradise," according to Bungalow Heaven residents. On April 26, visitors can experience this pleasant, and historic, neighborhood for themselves as they stroll through Pasadena's first Landmark District, touring a collection of uniquely characteristic homes. The neighborhood was recently added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
Bungalow Heaven, in central-northeast Pasadena, California, has one of the largest collections of Craftsman homes anywhere in the United States hundreds were constructed from 1905 to 1925. The architecture reflected a movement away from ornate Victorian sensibilities to simpler structures in harmony with nature through the use of materials such as river rock and redwood shingles, and by including front porches and wide windows.
During the self-guided tour of the historic neighborhood and home interiors, docents will be on hand to offer commentary and answer questions. Visitors will also be treated to demonstrations of restoration work, music, and refreshments. Several food trucks will be on hand for those who wish to purchase lunch.
New this year is the Bungalow Heaven Trolley Tour. Enjoy a 45 minute narrated tour of the Landmark District historic homes and features. Departs from McDonald Park at 12:30pm, 1:30pm and 2:30pm. Bungalow Heaven is located north of the 210 Freeway, between Lake and Hill avenues. It is bordered on the north and south by Washington and Orange Grove boulevards.
More information on the tour can be found online at www.bungalowheaven.org. Tickets will also be available on the day of the tour in McDonald Park for $25.
