Vikram Jayanti's vibrant, rock and rolling film invents a new genre: the musical documentary. With the
sophisticated creativity of a Sondheim musical, Jayanti weaves song and human drama into a reflective
murder mystery. In 2003, renowned song writer and "wall of sound" music producer Phil Spector was accused of
murdering actress Lana Clarkson. Janyanti deftly melds video from the trial, a revealing interview with Spector
while he awaited the verdict, and vintage films of recording artists such as the Ronettes, the Righteous Brothers,
and Ike & Tina Turner. Phil Spector considers himself an artist & a rebel; a loner seeking to be accepted and
respected. Not prone to modesty, he compares himself to Miles Davis, Lenny Bruce, Charlie Parker, Galileo, and
Einstein. Jaynanti brilliantly uses Spector's music to illuminate his psyche. His songs, classics he wrote such as
Spanish Harlem, Chapel of Love, and Be My Baby and classics he produced such as The Beatles Let It Be and
John Lennon's solo albums, will have you dancing in your seat. Notwithstanding the infectious music, the question of his guilt or
innocence remains. The film carefully analyzes the psychological meanings of his lyrics and music as evidence of his state of mind which,
in turn, are clues to the mystery of what actually happened in his living room the night Lana Clarkson died. â"Marty Haas USA, 2009, 100 min
