Beckett, Durang, Durang, Beckett
SHORTS 2015
A rollercoaster evening of short plays by theatre giants Samuel Beckett and Christopher Durang, woven with contemporary modern dance!
Presented by K Dance
Directed by Billy Christopher Maupin and Shirley Kagan
Choregraphed by Kaye Weinstein Gary

Starring Caleb Wade, Carlen Kernish, Emily Poff, Jennifer Stohl, Kaye Weinstein Gary, Lisa Kotula, and Maggie Roop
Special Appearance by Richmond Favorite Jacqueline Jones

Only 3 Performances!

Richmond Favorite Jacqueline Jones leads the evening as Durang's Mrs. Sorken, a middle-aged suburban matron who is scheduled to give a lecture on the meaning of theatre, but has lost her notes. Relying on memory, her comments are dotty, but definitely endearing.

Samuel Beckett's Quad consists of four characters walking rapidly to drumbeats on the boarders of four quadrants along various paths and patterns.  We are transported back before language and before drama  to the unrecapturable first time when, in a Greek ritual tragedy, a chorus' measured steps would determine the metered "feet" of poetry.

Medea  is an hysterical short play co-authored by Durang and Wendy Wasserstein that follows Medea and her chorus of three women as they try to figure out if it's appropriate to kill your children to punish your husband. Jason shows up, as does a messenger with news of Lady Teazle and a Deus ex Machina who comes down from the sky to cheer everybody up.

Rockaby by Beckett and starring artistic director Kaye Weinstein Gary directed by Shirley Kagan charts a woman's journey back into life before she arrives at death.

In For Whom the Southern Belle Tolls, an affectionate parody of The Glass Menagerie, the fading Southern belle, Amanda, tries to prepare her hypersensitive, hypochondriacal son, Lawrence, for "the feminine caller." Amanda tries to face everything with "charm and vivacity," but sometimes she just wants to hit somebody.
