Misa's Fugue
Over a period of 22 months, students from Fleetwood Area High School in Berks County crafted a film from a story that Frank Grunwald took 66 years to tell. In April, the Emmy-nominated documentary film will come to Ephrata for its first theatrical run in Lancaster County. The film's director, FAHS Media and Communications teacher, Sean D. Gaston, is a resident of Ephrata.
The film weaves art, music, history and technology with emotion and iinspiration, telling the extraordinary story of Holocaust survivor Frank "Misa" Grunwald through a lens focused, in part, by over 200 students and 10 of their teachers at Fleetwood. The group also had the support of three independent film making professionals and 5 international organizations.
Misa's Fugue is a testament to Grunwald's spirit and the amazing story of the twists, turns and torments of his four-year ordeal as a victim of Nazi persecution. Since its premiere in April 2012 the film has been shown around the world, including official screenings in Australia, Canada and for the staff and volunteers of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. It has caught the eye of numerous film festival selection commit-tees and last year, it was named "Best Documentary" at the Zagreb (Croatia) Jewish Film Festival. It has also garnered five "Telly Awards", a Communicator Award and has also caught the eye of major Hollywood brass.
