Mansions & Music II: Prints and Impressions
PROGRAM Esther Yune, piano
"When you don't have any money to go on holiday, you must make do by using your imagination," wrote Debussy. This program begins with his triptych, Estampes(Prints). The two pieces (Pagodas,Evening in Granada) constitute an exotic travelogue; the third piece,Gardens in the Rain, is stay-at-home music. Other impressionistic masterpieces on the program include Debussy'sFeux d'artifice(Fireworks) and Ravel'sJeux d'eau(The Play of Water).
SETTING The Mediterranean villa of Betty Sargent and John Swain is situated on a hillside in the North San Rafael area of Pasadena. An architecturally significant property built in 1930, the home features teak hardwood flooring, hand-hewn beam ceilings, stunning ironwork, black and white marble floors, and other features unique to the style of architect Gordon Kaufmann. The concert will be held on the second floor overlooking the Annandale Golf Course.
