ABOUT OUR HONOREE
Marian Sulzberger Heiskell has served with GrowNYC (then Council on the Environment of NYC) from its inception in 1970. Since that time, she has guided and watched over the organization, first as Co Chair with Mayor Lindsay and Mayor Beame, then as Chairman until 1992 when she became Honorary Chair. Mrs. Heiskell remains its best friend and cheerleader today. A forward-thinking conservationist who didn't believe urban environment was an oxymoron but an opportunity, she worked tirelessly to convince fellow New Yorkers of the same. Marian's belief that GrowNYC could change the urban landscape through innovative solutions led to the organization's flagship programs. Today, she continues to use the full force of her considerable charm, deft persuasion, and passion for the organization she founded to raise awareness and funds, offer advice and support.
Mrs. Heiskell served as a Director of The New York Times Company from 1963 to 1997. She also served as its Director of Special Activities from 1963 to 1977 and is proud to have been the granddaughter, daughter, wife, sister and aunt of the Publisher of The New York Times. She is a dedicated environmentalist and a leader in many public and philanthropic activities. She has been a particular advocate for maintaining and preserving green spaces in New York and around the nation. She formerly served on the Boards of several other corporations, including the Ford Motor Company, Merck & Co., Inc., and Consolidated Edison Company of New York, Inc. (Mrs. Heiskell was the first woman elected to these three boards). Mrs. Heiskell is President of her family's Foundation, The Sulzberger Foundation. In addition, she is Honorary Chairman of GrowNYC, and as Chairman of The New 42nd Street, Inc., she was a driving force behind the restoration of 42nd Street and Times Square. She is also Chairman of the of the National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy; a member of the Board of Directors of Audubon New York, the 42nd Street Development Corporation, New Yorkers for Parks and a member of the Executive Committee of The New York Botanical Garden.
