Bobby & Matt; Passing Notes Through Life
They met at Bobby's eighth birthday party in 1959 and became unlikely friends for life. One grew up to be a Brigadier General, the other a renowned gay writer. And only in their fifties did they realize the true depth of their bond. A complicated story told very simply through their letters and notes – simple words that tell the story of life, loss, love, and war.
The play is staged very simply, as well. Two actors onstage read from the texts of their notes and letters. Yet the story they weave is anything but simple, encompassing the turbulent sixties, Vietnam, Kent State, Watergate, Gay Marriage and Don't Ask Don't Tell.
Bobby is played by Film and TV veteran Frank Simons and Matt is portrayed by Broadway veteran David Allen Jones.
"Bobby and Matt" is by GTC Artistic Director Kevin Cochran and is presented as a special event of the GTC New Play Initiative, a program designed to develop new works for the professional stage.
Previous New Play Initiative projects have included Blake…da Musical! (LA Ovation Award for Best New Musical), Straight Up with a Twist (Ovation nomination for Best Solo Performance), Eternal Equinox (Ovation nomination for Best Set) and Film Chinois (Ovation Award for Best New Play).
