TTC presents Pirates of Penzance
THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE, or The Slave of Duty, is the story of Frederic, who, having completed his 21st year, is released from his apprenticeship to a band of tender-hearted pirates. Upon his release he meets and falls in love with Mabel, the daughter of Major-General Stanley, and shortly thereafter finds out that due to a trick clause in his apprenticeship, he has actually not been released from his indentures. Will Frederic betray his new-found love in favor of his duty? And what of the pirates who are plotting revenge against the Major-General for having cheated them out of plunder?
"I've always loved PIRATES--it's far and away my favorite Gilbert and Sullivan because it's so irresistibly dashing. Handsome pirates storming the beach, sword fights, beautiful maidens being carried off--what's not to love? I'm also crazy about the music--I grew up on this gorgeous and witty score and am unable to resist singing along (at least in my head!) whenever I get to see it performed.
We're going to preserve nearly all of the score, but trim down the show just a bit--get it out of the baroque heaviness of the late 19th century and make it a
little leaner, sassier and sexier." - Clara Barton Green, Director
