THE MÁIRTÍN DE CÓGÁIN PROJECT PREMIERS IN MISSISSIPPI

(Jackson, MS) Máirtín de Cógáin is an entertainer of unending talent from Co. Cork, Ireland. A crowned All-Ireland Storytelling Champion twice over, a noted singer, a dancer, and a heart-beating bodhrán (Irish drum) player, Máirtín does a bit of acting on the side (his biggest part to date was in Ken Loach's Palm d'Or winning movie, The Wind That Shakes The Barley, where he also sings the title track.)

Máirtín has gathered a trio of musicians around him to form the Máirtín de Cógáin Project. Valerie Plested is one of the finest and most musically expressive young talents to have emerged on the Southern Celtic music scene. An exceptional player of flute and tinwhistle, Justin Murphy's powerful tone and swaggering rhythm have been favorably compared to Seamus Egan and Frankie Kennedy. Don Penzien's dexterous work on dadgad guitar provides not only the solid, driving rhythms that are perceptive and sensitive accompaniments to songs and airs. It took a hurricane to unite this unique group (named Katrina) at a benefit event, and they became fast friends, now turned 'band'.

The show is entitled 'From Cork with Love' and brings the unique view of romance from the south of Ireland. Ballads of love, friendship, betrayal and a love-often-overlooked are often overlooked when they are from one's own city, and the Project burnishes them to their original luster, all the while time poking fun at either side of the adventure. The night will have a few dance tunes and a story or two from the Corkman himself.

Fenian's Irish Pub will close the pub for this special concert to feature the Máirtín de Cógáin Project. Tickets are $15 at the door, or $10 for advance online purchase. Discounts are available for members of the Celtic Heritage Society and the Jackson Irish Dancers.
