INTRODUCTION TO SANSKRIT
INTRODUCTION TO SANSKRIT
AN 8 CLASS COURSE with VASUDEVA DAS
SATURDAYS 1:00-2:30PM MARCH 14,21,28 / APRIL 11,18 / MAY 2,9,16
THE BHAKTI CENTER  25 FIRST AVENUE NYC
ADMISSION: $150 FOR 8 CLASSES

Sanskrit literally means "refined" or "cultured." Traditionalists revere Sanskrit as a divinely-revealed language, with timeless roots. It is therefore also known as deva-vani, "the language of the gods." The most important Sanskrit works are the four Vedas, the Upanishads, the Ramayan, the Mahabharata and the Puranas.

This introductory course aims to familiarize students with the basic concepts of Sanskrit, which will help them in their study of sacred bhakti texts like the Bhagavad-gita and the Bhagavata-purana. Additionally, the course will help students properly recite sacred verses (or mantras), an ancient practice that seeks to awaken our original spiritual nature through divine sound.

Course objectives include:
Reading, writing and pronunciation of the Sanskrit alphabet
The eight Sanskrit cases and their meaning
Conjugation and use of Sanskrit verbs
Formation of Sanskrit nouns from verbs
Syntax of Sanskrit verses of the Bhagavad-gita
      Formation of compound words
Recitation of Bhagavad-gita verses in proper rhyme and meter

The course consists of six modules which will be taught over six sessions on Saturdays from March 14  to April 18. An additional two classes will be taught on word formation on May 2 and May 9.

Module 1  The Alphabet
Module 2  Sanskrit Nouns and Their Declension
Module 3  Sanskrit Verbs
Module 4  Euphonic Combination (sandhi)
Module 5  Compound Words (samasa)

No prior knowledge of Sanskrit is required to take the course, but some familiarity with the Bhagavad-gita (original Sanskrit and English translation) will be helpful.

Study Materials: The required text accompanying the course is Bhagavad-gita As It Is by A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, available for purchase at The Bhakti Boutique or at the first class. Other materials will be handed out during the course.

Vasudeva Das has been studying classical languages since the tender age of twelve in his hometown near Amsterdam, the Netherlands. In 1998 he became a committed practitioner of bhakti-yoga, marking the beginning of 16 years of monastic life, dedicated to the study of Sanskrit texts and the teachings they imparted. In 2001-2002, he had the privilege of studying under the tutelage of the late Gopiparanadhana dasa, a well-respected Sanskrit scholar in Vrindavan, India. Today, Vasudeva serves as the head pujari (priest) at The Bhakti Center, overseeing the temple worship, and regularly conducts classes on the Bhagavata-purana and the Bhagavad-gita.
