Sanskrit literally means "refined" or "cultured." Traditionalists revere Sanskrit as a divinely-revealed language, with timeless roots. It is therefore also known as deva-vani, "the language of the gods." The most important Sanskrit works are the four Vedas, the Upanishads, the Ramayan, the Mahabharata and the Puranas.
This introductory course aims to familiarize students with the basic concepts of Sanskrit, which will help them in their study of sacred bhakti texts like the Bhagavad-gita and the Bhagavata-purana. Additionally, the course will help students properly recite sacred verses (or mantras), an ancient practice that seeks to awaken our original spiritual nature through divine sound.
Course objectives include: Reading, writing and pronunciation of the Sanskrit alphabet The eight Sanskrit cases and their meaning Conjugation and use of Sanskrit verbs Formation of Sanskrit nouns from verbs Syntax of Sanskrit verses of the Bhagavad-gita Formation of compound words Recitation of Bhagavad-gita verses in proper rhyme and meter
The course consists of six modules which will be taught over six sessions on Saturdays from March 14 to April 18. An additional two classes will be taught on word formation on May 2 and May 9.
