"'Philosophy Talk' is as accessible as it is thoughtful..." Los Angeles Times

"An American radio show, 'Philosophy Talk,' could teach British broadcasting a thing or two about quality intellectual debate...one of the great joys of American radio. It's radio that knows how to talk." The Guardian UK

Philosophy Talk is a weekly, one-hour public radio series that originates from San Francisco's KALW 91.7fm, Sunday mornings at 10am. With a down-to-earth, no-nonsense approach, the program brings the richness of philosophic thought to everyday subjects. Topics are lofty (Truth, Beauty, Justice), arresting (Terrorism, Intelligent Design, Suicide), and engaging (Baseball, Love, Happiness). Not a lecture or a college course, its philosophy in action! Philosophy Talk gives its audience the opportunity to explore issues of importance in a thoughtful, friendly fashion, where thinking is encouraged.

WHAT IS AN ADULT? (with guest Ethan Watters)
Though humans beings are biologically programmed to endure a long period of immaturity before entering full adulthood, the timing of our transition from immaturity to adulthood is profoundly shaped by society and culture.  In the Middle Ages, people married, had children, went off to war and took on all the traditional trappings of adulthood in their early teens.  But today many people put off those trappings until well into their thirties.  Some have even suggested that we need a new vocabulary to describe the variety of life stages, falling between adolescence, adulthood, experienced by 21st century humans.  In this episode, John and Ken ask,  âWhat is an adult?â with author and journalist Ethan Watters.

THE EXTENDED MIND (with guest George Lakoff)
3pm
Though Descartes may have imagined the mind to be a thing separate and apart from the material world and from the body, an increasing number of psychologists and philosophers believe that to understand how the mind really works, we must understand it as both embedded in a body and as situated in an environment.   According to some, in fact, the body and the environment do not just house the mind, but are really part of the mind in the sense that workings of the mind depend upon and exploit the body and the environment. Join John, Ken, and the guest, noted linguist and cognitive scientist, George Lakoff, as they explore the extended mind, embodied cognition, and the situated self.

April 24th, 2011:

GAY PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (with guest Gilbert Herdt)
12pm
The question of gay rights has become a hot button issue, with opposition taking on the air of a moral panic and support taking on the air of a righteous crusade.   In an attempt to shed philosophical light rather than political heat, John, Ken, and their guest, noted anthropologist Gilbert Herdt, author of Moral Panics, Sex Panics: The Fight for Sexual Rights, dispassionately examines competing scientific, religious, and philosophical visions of the nature of gayness and explore the consequences of those competing visions for arguments for and against gay rights.

WHO DUNNIT?  THE LANGUAGE OF RESPONSIBILITY (with guest Lera Boroditsky)
3pm
Who is responsible for the broken vase in the foyer? How harshly should criminals be punished for their crimes? Did Justin Timberlake mean to disrobe Janet Jackson during her infamous âwardrobe malfunctionâ incident? Though you might think that these questions have simple answers, they just got a little more complicated. Cognitive scientists have recently discovered some surprising ways in which the language we use influences how we think about responsibility and agency.  Join  John, Ken and noted psychologists Lera Boroditsky, as they take a probing look at cross cultural variations in language of responsibility in an attempt to illustrate the way language shapes thought.
