OPENwater Curing Series #1: Mediterranean Pickles
18 Reasons and OPENrestaurant are teaming up to offer a 2-part curing workshop in preparation for OPENwater, OPENrestaurant's 2-day food and art exploration of water politics in the Bay Area. In this first workshop, artist and chef Jen Smith will stimulate our brains with her recent video Oh I Limp Concise Sadism! After this short artistic foray, we will whet our appetites by making various pickles, including fennel, capers and salt cured lemons, that will be used during OPENwater. Please bring something to hold back your hair and a small clean jar with lid so you can bring home some of the briny deliciousness. The second workshop will focus on fish curing (tickets sold separately).
Jen Smith is a Los Angeles based artist interested in how food intersects with contemporary art practices. Her business, Full Moon Pickles, provides catering and pickle subscription service to the arts and entertainment industries in Los Angeles. Her curiosity about food informs a seemingly seperate formal aesthetic practice that explores mythologies of the state, libidinal impulse, gender and excess.
