Funk & Fruit Friday featuring Ruga Luna Wild Ale Bottle Release
Our First Funk & Fruit Friday is Friday 8/14. Your pre-paid ticket secures you a bottle of Ruga Luna, our first super limited wild ale release. Plus we'll also have a new Berlinner Weisse, a Pomegranate version of Claritas, a Pomegranate version of Jucundus, and a Kiwi Cask of Jucundus available for you to sample.
Ruga Luna is the first wild beer from Mike Hess Brewing. The name translates from Latin to "Pucker Moon" represents both the funky, sour qualities of the beer and the many moons which have passed since it's inception.
This beer started out as a wet-hopped IPA intended for MHB's first Anniversary Party way back in 2012. Some where along the beer picked up a bit of Brettanomyces. The goal for our Anno Duo was a big fresh IPA with clean yeast character. A bit of Brett changed the profile. Rather than release this beer immediately as Brett-Anno Duo, we decided to steer into the wild side and use this as our first experiment with funky beers.
So we racked the beer into a Chardonnay barrel and pitched some Roselare yeast (the same yeast Rodenbach uses), then waited... and waited... and waited...
Two and a half years later we bottled the batch and are now offering it for your consumption.
Keep in mind, this is an experiment. Which makes this beer both rare and non-canonical for us. We don't have a reserve of sour barrels or any sour program in the works just yet. This was a fun side project for us, and we hope you enjoy it with the same experimental frame of mind.
Here's how the label describes the flavor profile of Ruga Luna:
"A complex taste profile, featuring cherry-pie sourness, with the background hoppiness from 40 kilograms of Chinook and Cascade wet hops per barrel. Refreshing and crisp, tart and lovely."
Now we want to know what you think of Ruga Luna. Cheers!
