Chasinakuy
TRIO CHASKINAKUY PERFORMANCE DESCRIPTION
Deeply rooted in mountains that rise well above 10,000 feet, the traditional music fromthe Andes is both profoundly earthbound and joyously uplifting. As Trio Chaskinakuy (cha-ski-NOCK-wee), Andean music specialists Edmond Badoux, Francy Vidal and Daniel Zamalloa perform the compelling melodies and infectious rhythms of highmountain festivities in Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, northern Chile and Argentina. The triosings in Spanish and in Quechua and brings to the stage an extraordinary, museum-quality collection of up to 30 regional instruments. Playing flutes and panpipes ofbamboo, bone, and feathers, goatskin drums, armadillo shell charango, Peruvian harp, violin, a 10-foot long trumpet and much more, Chaskinakuy captures the sounds of theAndes and the imaginations of audiences. In the spirit of the Quechua word meaning to give and receive from hand to hand among many, Chaskinakuy invites listeners on an unforgettable musical journey.

BIOGRAPHIES
Edmond Badoux is regarded as a pioneer in presenting Andean music to NorthAmerican audiences. A lifelong devotee of the music with repeat visits to the Andes, heis a masterful performer on a full range of traditional wind, string and percussioninstruments, including the shoulder-wielded Peruvian harp. One of the early innovatorsto play panpipes simultaneously with either guitar or charango, he plays each withdeceptive ease and brings new meaning to the term "multi-instrumentalist". Born inSwitzerland, he moved to Canada where he joined fellow emigrants from Argentina andChile to form the groundbreaking, Montréal-based ensemble, Los Quinchamalí (1971-74).He later co-founded and directed the musical group Sukay (1974-1985) and recorded twoLP albums on the Flying Fish and Aural Traditions labels. Since 1985 he and Chaskinakuyco-founder Francy Vidal have toured extensively across the U.S. and have producedthree recordings on the Chaskinakuy label. A highly respected and sought after craftsmanof the Andean panpipes (and the African-American "quills"), flutes, and drums, Mr.Badoux has made most of those with which Chaskinakuy performs.
Francy Vidal is an 8th generation Californiana with roots in Mexico and in Europe. Apassionate student of Latin American culture and history, she has been immersed in thetraditional musics of the Andean regions since the early 1970's. Through her research oftexts and recordings and extended travel in Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia, she brings aninformed and discerning ear to her interpretation of Andean musical styles. A giftedmulti-instrumentalist, Ms. Vidal sings and performs on a wide variety of native flutes, panpipes, drums, percussion instruments, and the 10-string Peruvian mandolin. She co¬founded the touring ensemble Chaskinakuy with Edmond Badoux in 1985 with the purpose of introducing lesser known, but equally important, Andean musics andinstruments to North American audiences. Dozens of regional tours and hundreds ofperformances later, the group has been recognized by arts councils, cultural centers, educators, and book publishers for its contribution to the broader understanding ofLatin America's diverse musical legacy.
Daniel Zamalloa was born in Cusco, Peru, the ancient capital of the Inca civilization, and grew up in the old neighborhood of San Blas, renowned for its artisans and musicians. Since moving to the San FranciscoBay area in the late 1970's, he has worked with artists, musicians, dancers, youth groups, and human rights organizations on numerous cultural projects. He has recorded withvarious musicians, including the Inkuyo quartet (Celestial Harmonies, 1994) and until 1999 was the musical director of De Rompe y Raja, an ensemble devoted to the music and dance traditions from Peru's coastal region. Since 1995 he has collaborated with EdmondBadoux and Francy Vidal in concert performances, traditional celebrations, regionaltours and recording projects as Trio Chaskinakuy.
