Frightened and in shock, Riya and her friend Miriam descend the stairs of the World Trade Center's North Tower on 9/11. Days later, Riya is safe at her parents' house and reflects on the enormity of the trauma. Despite being inseparable in the stairwell, Riya is the one who makes it out alive and is left desperately trying to comprehend how she survived and Miriam perished.
