Earshot Jazz: Mavis Staples
Legendary soul/gospel artist Mavis Staples kindled a new kind of fire with her 2010 Grammy-nominated live album Hope at the Hideout. Backed by a rootsy, stripped-back three-piece featuring guitar bass and drums—and two vocalists, including sister Yvonne—her forceful reflections on the civil-rights movement left one reviewer raving: "There are few living musicians who can lay claim to being America's conscience … Staples showed she can light a fire, agitate for change or re-energize the American songbook." As part of the Earshot Jazz Festival, Staples brings the same five musicians, the same repertoire of freedom songs, and a gutsy attitude for a performance that's every bit as inspirational as you'd expect—but in a slightly different key. Presented by Earshot Jazz with Town Hall Seattle.
