We love Mike and Ruthy. The folk-rock duo (married couple and new parents) of folk rock icons The Mammals, have endeared themselves to audiences everywhere they've played - including up the street at Toad on a few occasions, This album, Million to One, is the latest in a growing discography that continues to push the boundaries of the folk-rock genre. The story behind the making of Million To One is as compelling as the album's songs themselves. Where most bands limit fan involvement to the occasional live show "stomp, clap and sing-along" and post-show merch table pleasantries, Mike + Ruthy took things a two-step further. They issued a massive fan-list call-out inviting the full breadth of their fanbase to help make what's being called their "folk-rock masterpiece." The payoff is huge — not only to the fans who helped birth this record but to the audiences that wiil get to see these terrific songs performed live in an intimate setting like he Lizard Lounge.
Support act Danielle Doyle, another Toad fave, is a fast rising star on the local music scene and for good reason as evidenced by this review: "I just stumbled upon Danielle Doyle, and she's really good – smooth, sultry vocals in the alt-country style, with soulful and mysterious acoustic guitar and drums accompaniment… the music supports and enhances the vocals; never overshadows or obscures. Lovely… her songwriting seems to come from a deep, personal place..." – Boston Survival Guide.
Finally - at 9:30 doors will become free and the legendary blues rock outfit know as Treat Her Right will take over for an after party starting at 10PM. In case you haven't heard, a realigned and reinvigorated version of the classic bluesy rock band from the 80's known as Treat Her Right has been recreating the scene locally that led them to the brink of major label success back in their heyday. Many folks attending these shows were in diapers when the band (which included the Mark Sandman of Morphine) proved amidst a sea of 80's excess that sometimes less is more. David Champagne, Jim Fitting, Billy Beard and Steve Mayone swagger their way through classic Treat Her Right songs as new songs written in the last few months.
