Julia Jarcho & Brian Thorstenson Playwriting Class: Strange Days, Strange Plays
Even though the Same Old Thing can be comforting, moving, and certainly (as TV has taught us) lucrative, theater seems to offer a chance to explore the New: the weird, uncomfortable, and surprising. In this course we ask: how can playwriting embrace strangeness? How can we use the resources of language, space, and time to surprise each other--and ourselves? What's the difference between the strange and the merely shocking? How can the strange team up with the familiar? Each week, we'll look at work that offers a different angle on the topic of strangeness and surprise. We'll bump this up against the strangeness and surprises of the world around us as we look at a set of plays and writing by modern and contemporary playwrights and thinkers. We'll also do writing exercises and share the fruits of our experimentation, with the aim of starting (or continuing) a new full-length project by the end of the course.
