The Katonah Museum Himmel Award
The Himmel Award and Lecture is an annual celebration honoring an outstanding leader in the art world. This year's recipient is Mary Schmidt Campbell, Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. Dean Campbell will speak on the challenges of balancing the vision of an artist with the desires of an audience when creating a work of public art. Her talk will explore some well known successes and failures of public art of the past 50 years and suggest how each example reveals as much about a people, a country, or a given community as it does about the individual artist. Prior to her appointment at NYU, Dean Campbell served as the New York City Commissioner of Cultural Affairs under Mayors Koch and Dinkins and was the Executive Director of the Studio Museum in Harlem from 1977 to 1987. She is currently writing a book on Romare Bearden for Oxford University Press, to be published in 2011.
