Book Launch, Signing and Lecture
Our yearlong centennial celebration of the 1915 Panama-California Exposition continues with the release of Images of America: Mission Hills (Arcadia Publishing, 2015). The authors Allen Hazard and Janet O'Dea will be on hand for a book signing and lecture. You may purchase the book in advance and it will be held for you to pick up the day of the event. The book will be available for purchase at all SOHO Museum Shops after March 22: the Marston House Museum Shop, The Whaley House Museum Shop, Warner-Carrillo Ranch House Museum Shop, and the Santa Ysabel Store.
Allen and Janet have lived in Mission Hills for 14 years and have made researching and documenting the community's history in collecting oral histories, period photographs, and ephemera. In writing the book, they met with former and present Mission Hills residents, acquiring over 200 photographs that tell the 100-year-old history of one of San Diego's most intact early 20th century streetcar bungalow communities. A majority of the images are from private collections and have never been seen by the general public before. The historian husband and wife team will describe their journey in writing the book and share the community stories they learned, presenting images from the book and other rare images they have since found.
Allen Hazard and Janet O'Dea live and work in Mission Hills, and live in a historically designated 1920 Craftsman home. Long-time active members of Save Our Heritage Organisation (SOHO), they have served on the board, multiple committees, and Allen has participated with the home tours as event chairperson the last three years. Allen and Janet led and helped found Mission Hills Heritage where Janet chaired the organization's first years and Allen began the educational programs. They lead popular walking tours in Mission Hills and have given lectures on many historic subjects including a particular passion of Allen's: Prairie School architecture.
