Oakland's own YAK FILMS is Yoram Savion and Kash Gaines. This youngfilmmaking team is one of the Bay's greatest points of filmmaking pride, turning out hundreds of works of cinematic art, each with a compelling story behind it. Not just for dance lovers, these short films are historical documentation of a time and place in Oakland, the Bay Area and beyond.
8:00PM MAMACHAS DEL RING (Q&A director in attendance) - california premiere*
The story of Carmen Rosa the Champion, who struggles to make it on her own in the male-dominated world of Bolivian professional wrestling. Never before had Bolivia seen an indigenous woman take her petticoats and bowler hat into the ring. Along with three other cholitas, Carmen became an international star, and all four were anointed the Mamachas of the Ring.
9:30PM AMERICAN GRINDHOUSE - california premiere*
Dig deep into the history of the critically overlooked but culturally
explosive American Exploitation Film. With ample scenes from the
works of Oakland's own Russ MEYER, as well as Gordon Parks Jr., Quentin Tarantino, and Scott Sanders (BLACK DYNAMITE) just to name a few, this is a must see film for anyone who appreciates political subversion, sex, drugs, violence, motorcycles, blood and guts at the movies.
