Pitchers and Pizza Tour (April through June)
Pizza and beer - the classic Columbus combination.
On this tour we'll introduce you to some of the finest pizza in Columbus paired with pours of exceptional local craft beers.
Your guide, local food writer and preeminent pizza historian of Columbus, Jim Ellison (CMH Gourmand) will mix pizza lore with microbrews at four of the city's most iconic pizza joints. We'll begin with what we're convinced is the thickest, gooiest, and best example of Chicago style pizza in the city. Delicious deep dish wedges will be paired up with beer from neighboring Four String Brewing. Discussion will hinge around the intriguing and unusual backgrounds of both.
Next, we head to one of the founding pizza families our city, with their Columbus Style Pizza recipes dating back to 1953. We'll discuss what makes Columbus style pizza what it is while eating one of the best examples in town. We'll pair this pie with a beer from the oldest microbrewery in our city, Columbus Brewing Company.
Our third stop is what may be the most famous pizza in the capital city, started by a few guys who could not find a slice of New York Style pizza anywhere - especially late at night. From its humble beginnings in a Short North shack, they've built an indie pizza empire, and can now be found on food trucks, in multiple locations paired with local bars, and various other hot spots throughout Columbus. In addition to the history of New York Style pizza we will discuss what makes their infamous sauce so good. We'll dine at their location inside Ledo's Tavern, which has been a drinking destination in Old North Columbus for decades. Our beer pairing here will be an Ohio craft beer.
We wrap up with a place that has a style all of their own, making "pizza for the people". This unique spot has long been a favorite destination for campus and Old North Columbus residents. We will review what makes their "Smokin' Joe's" style so addictive. Our beer here will be Jackie O's or Great Lakes Brewing Company to mellow out the spicy heat from our pizza selections.
