Event
NYC Public HS Choice: Calm and Clear
* a clear explanation of the different kinds of school choices; Is it worth taking the SHSAT if my child might not want Stuyvesant? What if my child isn't particularly interested in math and science but wants a strong college prep program? What is an Ed Opt or Limited Unscreened program? What is the difference between a screened school and a specialized school and what are they looking for? What are the audition schools looking for? what if my child likes their art but doesn't want to be an artist?
* what to look for in each type of school and how to interpret the data; should we take a chance on a school with a 70% 4 year grad rate? can I apply to a school that gives priority by residence, even if I don't live there? can we take a chance on a new program? What are the Quality Reviews and Progress Reports? Does our high school choice affect the college search?
* strategies to organize the search; how do I make it through the Directory without losing my mind? how many schools should we tour and place on the application? should we go to the HS fair and what do we look for on the tour?
* I show you how to make a tour packet so you can really focus on the schools you want and I provide you with a tour questionnaire, checklist template and short list of possible school options to help you narrow your search
from a parent and expert who has been there and can show you the way.
