Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company: The Lecture
Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company presents
The Lecture
November 2, 2010, 7pm at Ailey Citigroup Theater
The online box office closes on Nov. 2nd at 3pm. Tickets will be available for purchase at the Ailey Citigroup Theater.
For the first time, the Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company presents a program-length solo. Choreographed and performed by Daniel Gwirtzman, The Lecture mixes the serious with the comic, the existential with the everyday. Set to a score of pre-recorded lectures by university professors, Daniel Gwirtzman marries the intellectual and the physical to explore a variety of subjects including the history of language, the science of happiness, the nature of abstraction, mathematics, human evolution, and dreams.
This year, the Company celebrates its 12th year and Artistic Director Daniel Gwirtzman's 15th year as a New York City choreographer. To mark these occasions, Gwirtzman has created a 40-minute solo for the dancer who has been with him the longest...himself! Gwirtzman, who has been described as "sensual", "playful", "unusually supple", and "one who moves like the wind." He has toured with Garth Fagan Dance and the Mark Morris Dance Group. This spring, The DanceBreak Foundation, whose mission is to support "the next generation of great Broadway choreographers," selected him as one of six choreographers for their 2010 presentation.
No stranger to the world of academia, Daniel has been a visiting lecturer at Duke University, The University of Michigan, and The University of Tulsa. He was raised on meals of rigorous academics, with dance studies rounding out a well-balanced diet. Today, the information presented on The Charlie Rose Show provides a good amount of inspiration for Gwirtzman's work. With The Lecture Gwirtzman seeks to create a vehicle that can bridge the divides between the literal and the abstract and between representation and conceptualism.
Daniel Gwirtzman Dance Company, a nonprofit performing and teaching organization, was "founded upon a philosophy that dance should celebrate human achievement through a combination of discipline and unbound optimism." This summer, the Company was recognized with a Performing Arts Recovery Initiative grant from George Soros' Open Society Foundation.
