Jazz at The Riverside: From Mozart to Monk featuring Principal Members of Kevin Kirk & Onomatopoeia
Mozart brought together a Jazz Pianist/Composer and a Philharmonic Principal Violist/Composer. Their collaboration and formation of the seven piece band Kevin Kirk & Onomatopoeia has resulted in national and international recognition and awards; but, more importantly, great original music!
Both Mozart and Thelonious Monk (one of America's most important modern day composers) have inspired Onomatopoeia's original music which combines the precision required to perform Western European Art Music--Leonard Bernstein defined "Classical Music" as "Exact Music" music intended to be performed exactly as written--and "Improvisation", the creating in the moment musicianship required in America's Art Form exported to the rest of the world: Jazz.
On March 3rd, beginning at 7:00 p.m., young Jazz and Classical students of music and their respective music educators are invited to share an evening with Pianist Kevin Kirk, Violist Tom Tompkins, Drummer Jon Hyneman and Flutist Jeffrey Barker as they speak about their creative process and create, with great precision, in the moment!
