Celebrating A Black Gay Civil Rights Icon, Bayard Rustin
As part of the 2015 Black History Month, DGBM presents a celebration of the life of Bayard Rustin, recognizing his leadership and contributions to the Civil Rights movement of the 1960's.
As an openly gay Black man, Bayard not only fought for the civil rights of Blacks in America, he was one of the few prominent fighters for LGBT rights. Perhaps, to him, Civil Rights and LGBT Rights, both human rights, were one and the same.
During his involvement in the struggles and activism, as a close ally of Martin Luther King, he was at times welcomed and celebrated, and at other times, vilified, branded and condemned.
To commemorate and celebrate Bayard, There will be a screening of the widely acclaimed documentary, "Brother Outsider, The Life of Bayard Rustin", followed by a panel discussion, "An examination of how the challenges and difficulties experienced by those who fought for Civil Rights, persist today," on which Bayard's partner Walter Naegle will be a panelist.
Join us and let's celebrate one of our own...
