My Son Ted
Out of the Celtic cocoon that was Calgary's Tir Na Nog, My Son Ted has emerged with an eclectic new sound and (at the time of this writing, July 2014), a new CD, entitled "Carmel's Parlour".
Beginning in 1999, the band was formed by singer/guitarist Brian Volke, who named it Tir Na Nog (Land of the Young in Irish Gaelic). By 2006, after performing in bars, clubs and festivals, the almost current lineup of Brian Volke, Christie Simmons, Colin Peters, Brad Uphill and Robert J. McConnell was arrived at. In 2010 Shawn Kingston joined to make it complete. The band's sound is an even mixture of Calypso Ceilidh with Country Rock, acoustic and electric, with fiddles, mandolins, ukeleles and wah wah electric. The biggest feature is My Son Ted's wondrous three and four part harmonies. The band plays originals by Brian and Christie, and covers by Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Steve Earle, Van Morrison and...oh yeah, they can still do Irish fiddle tunes!
As well as multiple appearances at the Water Valley Celtic Music Festival, the band opened for the Chieftains at the Epcor Centre in Calgary on October 9, 2012. My Son Ted (as Tir Na Nog) has also performed at the 4th Street Lilac Festival in Calgary, the East Coulee Spring Fest and many other clubs, pubs and events. In 2003, their first CD "Home Again" was released. Now, My Son Ted has released "Carmel's Parlour".
