Leonard Barry | Irish Tin whistle, Uilleann Pipes workshops
TIN WHISTLE CLASS This class will explore repertoire and technique. The repertoire will explore the various regional styles and style of tunes within Irish Traditional Music. The main regional style addressed will be the music of the South West of Ireland with an emphasis on the Sliaibh Luachra style. Techniques addressed will be breath control, phrasing of the tune and ornamentation on the Tin Whistle. Students should bring, at a minimum, a practice set with a satisfactory playing tin whistle in the key of D and a recording device Classes will be done by ear.
UILLEANN PIPES CLASS This class will explore repertoire and technique. The repertoire will explore the various regional styles and style of tunes within Irish Traditional Music. The main regional style addressed will be the music of the South West of Ireland with an emphasis on the Sliaibh Luachra style. A style more commonly associated with the fiddle and accordion and how these tunes relate to the Uilleann Pipes.
The class will explore the techniques that make the sound of good piping so appealing. Techniques involved will be traditional to the Uilleann Pipes addressing both the "tight" staccato style and the more open "legato" style. It will explore the different styles of the older pipers such as Seamus Ennis, Leo Rowsome, Willie Clancy and Johnny Doran whilst also looking at the technique of more modern pipers if requires.
Students should bring, at a minimum, a practice set with a satisfactory playing chanter reed and a recording device. Classes will be done by ear.
