Khmer Arts Ensemble - "Lives of Giants"
Thirty dancers and musicians from Pnom Penh bring a magical tale from the Cambodian Ramayana to life in choreographer Sophiline Cheam Shapiro's newest work, "Lives of Giants." Reflecting her country's turbulent past, Shapiro strips away layers of elaborate traditional costuming and the formal vocabulary of classical Cambodian dance to examine how the perpetuation of violence leads to the erosion of the sublime. Shapiro's work with her Khmer Arts Ensemble is at once experimental and spiritual, classical, complex, powerful and spare. She was named a 2009 National Heritage Fellow, a lifetime award made by the National Endowment for the Arts in recognition of exceptional artistic excellence.
"A stunning new program of Cambodian dance and music. Shapiro's journey unfolds like a moving painting. Exquisite." âÂ"New York Times
