A wild night of flying lyrics, soulful playing and thoughtful performance brought to you by singer songwriter Ryan Alvanos and The Blue Ribbons. Guests Steve Mayone and Marc Pinansky will play sets with The Blue Ribbons as their backing band as well as a set by Pinansky's own Bored of Health.
Ryan Alvanos is a poet by training, editor by trade, songwriter by passion, busker by calling, and whim-blown vagabond by good fortune.
He likes to walk while writing lyrics, and draft after draft, his notebooks fill with lines and strikethroughs until the songs sing themselves.
With the wisdom of a stream's biggest fish and the whim of an anecdotal angler, Sharp Little Hooks (2014) sheds new light on the old-school art of fly fishing. The recording features The Blue RibbonsJames Rohr, Mike Castellana, Jef Charland, and Tauras Biscusand is available as a 12" vinyl record, CD, and digital download. From Here (2011) is a collection of songs that study places and shimmy between East and West, abundance and scarcity, and between taking off and staying put. This album also features a heaping helping of local-crème musicians, including Tom Bianchi, Raleigh Green, Sean Staples, Eric Royer, Dan Blakeslee, and Vance Gilbert.
Ryan is plowing the middle ground between Woody and Waits with songs that stroke your chin and get your itch like big nibs scratching coarse stock.
"Ryan Alvanos is an offbeat, insanely inventive singer-songwriter who sneaks up on you with a sly wit and subtle power." Steve Morse, former Boston Globe staff critic who now teaches a course in Rock History at Berklee College of Music
BLUE RIBBONS The Blue Ribbons was formed by singer/songwriter/keyboardist James Rohr. They have been building a base of devoted fans with their original and soulful music. Described as "Ray Charles and Tom Waits on a pirate ship with Sun Ra and Captain Beefheart," they combine "upbeat disillusionment and celebratory fatalism with musicianship" Charan Devereux;Boston Globe.
