Vision is a beautifully photographed film about a history rarely explored - a medieval sanctuary
on the last day of the first millennium. Devout villagers pray that their spirits might survive âÃ,ÂÃ,Âthe end
of the world.âÃ,ÂÃ, They witness the miraculous âÃ,Â" the sunrise announcing their survival, but with their
understanding of God now in question. Fast-forward one hundred years to confront a people still struggling
with religious doctrine, among them a young Hildegard, whose God-sent visions inspired her
earthly parents to bequeath her to the church as a gift to God. The filmâÃ,ÂÃ,Âs gothic imagery offers ironic
backdrop to the human passions and foibles Hildegard (Barbara Sukowa) witnesses. When unanimously
elected as "magistra" by her fellow nuns, HildegardâÃ,ÂÃ,Âs visions garner her respect, as well as
contempt, from the church hierarchy. She inspires a humanistic worship of God contradicting manâÃ,ÂÃ,Âs cruel
interpretations, challenging the hypocrisy of his self imposed orthodoxy. Hildegard begins the worldâÃ,ÂÃ,Âs
first travelling ministry. Based on the true life story of Hildegard von Bingen, the visionary German nun whose grand claims often
ran counter to the patriarchal world, she was the first woman to be canonized and to give council to notable figures across Europe.
