Greg Mortenson joins BOOKMARKS on his national tour for the paperback release of his bestseller, Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace Through Education in Afghanistan and Pakistan, which he co-authored.  His first book, Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace…One School At A Time was a #1 New York Times bestseller.
Co-founder of the nonprofit Central Asia Institute and Pennies for Peace, Mortenson grew up on the slopes of Mt. Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The award-winning U.S. Army veteran is a graduate of the University of South Dakota. In 1993, he climbed Pakistan's K2, the world's second highest mountain, located in the Karakoram range. While in the village of Korphe, Mortenson met a group of children and made a promise to help them build a school. He has dedicated his life to, and been hailed as a hero for, promoting community based education and literacy campaigns in remote mountain regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. Mortenson has gained the trust of Islamic leaders, military commanders, government officials and tribal chiefs from his tireless effort to champion education â€" especially for girls.
As of 2010, Mortenson has established over 131 schools which provide education to over 58,000 children in rural and often volatile regions of Pakistan and Afghanistan. This group includes 48,000 girls in an area where few educational opportunities existed before his intervention. His humanitarian efforts over the last 15 years have earned him Pakistan's highest civil award, Sitara-e-Pakistan ("Star of Pakistan"), and two nominations for the Nobel Peace Prize.
The evening's conversation will reveal Greg Mortenson's insights, highlight his experiences, and affirm his dedication to education and literacy.
