Volti Concert One
Volti's season begins with the West Coast premiere of Louis Andriessen's "Flora Tristan." With a libretto in French, Spanish and English by Dutch poet Fleur Bourgonje, this major (16-minute) work from 1990 is based on the life of the early 19th Century French-Peruvian feminist and labor leader, Flora Tristan âÂ" an amazing story about a remarkable woman. We'll also premiere a new commission by California composer Tom Flaherty, and present the West Coast premiere "Time's Dream," settings of six e. e. cummings poems by Florida composer David Lipten. You'll hear Frank Stemper's setting of "A Brief Message from Makanda, Illinois" âÂ" a portion of an inspirational speech from the late Senator Paul Simon âÂ" and be delighted by Kirke Mechem's charming and inventive "Five Centuries of Spring," performed by the combined voices of Volti and the high school singers from our Choral Institute education outreach program.
