WFMU and DJ Trouble present a special screening of My Secret World - The Story Of Sarah Records
WFMU and DJ Trouble present a special screening of My Secret World - The Story Of Sarah Records a film by Lucy Dawkins
Sarah Records' eight years of operation coincided with a time of change in the recording industry and the idea of the alternative; in 1987, when they started, indie music in the UK was still small and underground, a legacy of the wave of DIY production that came from the punk and post-punk moments of the late 1970s. In the 90s things changed drastically; alternative music exploded in the US, and the ecosystem of indie bands in the UK had given rise to the huge mass-market phenomenon of Britpop. My Secret World is the first feature length documentary to explore this legendary, influential and often misunderstood label. Now the label founders, former Sarah band members, music critics and those that have been inspired by the label tell their story. Determined to do things differently and innovative and sincere in their approach, Sarah Records' enduring influence has been far reaching and has influenced a generation of young people to pick up guitars, go back to basics and start making their own music. Q&A to follow with Sarah Records co-founder Clare Wadd.
