Marcel Pagnol (My Father's Castle, Manon of the Spring, The Baker's Wife, etc.), one of France's most renowned authors of the 20th century, spent his childhood in Marseilles. Fanny is the second play in what is known as his "Marseilles Trilogy" -- Marius, Fanny, and César -- and a French classic that has captivated audiences since its Paris world première, in 1931. The play begins two months after Marius abandoned Fanny to sail away on the schooner Malaysia. Nothing has been heard from him since. In the Bar de la Marine, Marius's father, César, is taciturn. When Fanny announces that she is pregnant with Marius's child, her mother, Honorine, is devastated . . .
The Trilogy's colorful characters have provided inspiration to many, including Alice Waters who named her world renowned Berkeley restaurant, Chez Panisse, after one of the central characters of Fanny.
