Edward Gardner Lewis and Atascadero, the town he left behind --Lon Allen
As we get older, we appreciate history more, especially local history. Did you know that Atascadero was artificially inserted between two already established cities Paso Robles and San Luis Obispo? Learning more about Atascadero from local historian Lon Allen will make you appreciate it more.
Edward Gardner Lewis (18691950) was a flamboyant and controversial promoter, magazine publisher, political activist, and the founder of Atascadero and two other American cities. In this course, we'll learn about the character of Lewis as a visionary - both for good and not so good. Along the way, we'll learn something of the history of Atascadero as well, from 1913 to 2013. Atascadero just celebrated its 100th anniversary. We'll meet in the entryway of the historic Atascadero City Hall for a tour of the building, then proceed to the third floor meeting room for our the rest of our course.
Lon Allan came to Atascadero in the fall of 1966 to teach at Atascadero High School, and has been heavily involved in the city's history ever since. After six years teaching, he served as editor of the Atascadero News for 35 years. He has written hundreds of articles about the history of Atascadero, focusing on its founder, Edward Gardner Lewis. His books include "Atascadero: The vision of one The work of many" and "Atascadero's Historic Business District." Now retired from newspaper work, Lon presently writes a weekly column "About the Colony" for the Tribune
