Aaron Posner Teaches Playwriting: Adaptations - Transforming Stories Into Theater
The goal of theatrical adaptation is to take a story from one form—short story, novel, interview, essay, poetry, music, mythology, classic text -- and to bring it effectively to life on stage. This practice, which has been around as long as people have been having adventures and telling stories about them, is highly regarded by many and summarily dismissed by others. Arguably the greatest adaptor of all time: William Shakespeare.
Using an experiential approach, the entire class will work together on an adaptation of a short story and a short piece of poetry or non-fiction, and use that work as a jumping off point to addresses the core issues of adaptation: what elements make an adaptation 'work'; pitfalls to watch out for; criteria to weigh when choosing your source material; effective and inspirational processes that help make your adaptation exciting and creatively challenging.
Aaron will also lead a discussion on the role of an adaptor's own voice and aesthetic, and offer practical advice from the trenches regarding rights, permissions, public domain, collaborators, and more.
