THE MASTERS: Guitarist Glenn Jones and Drummer Chris Corsano
On GLENN JONES: "The last two years have been an embarrassment of riches for the American Primitive guitar style... Glenn Jones is one of its most faithful practitioners; each of his records is somehow more understated and astonishing than the last. On My Garden State, every pluck and strum is methodical, yet each is a quiet wonder." - NPR Music
On CHRIS CORSANO: "Mr. Corsano is a peripatetic ace of the avant-garde."- Nate Chinen, New York Times (Sept. 2012)
"Last night, the punchline was on anybody who's ever made a drummer joke. [Corsano] played an astounding set that both redefined the instrument and created a coherent 35-minute piece of music that never ceased in its hallucinatory and resourceful improvisation." - Jesse Jarnow, Village Voice (May 2012).
Voted one of the '100 Greatest Drummers of Alternative Music' by Spin Magazine (May 2013)
Glenn Jones is a unique voice working in the decades-long tradition of American Primitivism. What sets him apart from the many devotees to this style is the combination of expressive playing and technical skill, most significantly his inventive use of alternate tunings and partial capos. As anyone knows who has seen him perform, Glenn is a remarkable storyteller, and his songs reflect that talent. The songs on Glenn's latest, My Garden State, are evocative and redolent, and serve as a testament to Glenn's talent for conveying a wide array of emotions, many times in one song, without saying a word.
Chris Corsano is a drummer who has been at the vanguards of free improvisation, noise, and avant-rock musics since the late 1990's. He has worked with saxophonists like Paul Flaherty, Joe McPhee and Evan Parker; guitarists such as Sir Richard Bishop, Heather Leigh Murray, and Jim O'Rourke; and one-of-a-kind artists like Björk and Jandek. His speed, dexterity, and responsiveness make him a highly sought-after improvising partner. As a solo performer, Corsano incorporates household objects, scrap metal, small reed and string instruments, contact microphones, and a slew of extended techniques to expand his kit's sound far beyond conventional notions of what drums can and cannot do.
