Paradise Lost
Harold Clurman called Clifford Odets "the most greatly gifted American playwright since Eugene O'Neil."  Odets' Paradise Lost is not just a tale of the Great Depression.  It is an example of the language of the streets raised to the level of poetry, and it shows the resilience of the American spirit in the worst of times.  Leo Gordon and his friends lose everything in the Depression.  They are cast down, but they're not out.  It's a lesson for us in our own difficult economic time.
