Viva la Mamma - Opera in Cinema
Ever since its first 20th century revival in 1962, Viva la Mamma has been performed more frequently than any of the other 20 operas Gaetano Donizetti composed during the first decade of his career. The ingredients of this comedy are timeless: stage mothers, snotty divas, mediocre regional theatre, and of course, a big burly guy in a dress!
This production from La Scala features some outstanding young artists, notably Jessica Pratt and the Prima Donna, Christian Senn as the Music Master, and Vincenzo Taormina as Mamma Agata. Audiences are lucky to catch this performance, not only to get a sneak peek at up-and-coming talent, but also to enjoy this rarely-performed bel canto gem!
