Sleep Furiously
(Gideon Koppel, UK, 2008, 35mm, 94 min) This delicate, tonally complex documentary by Gideon Koppel is a love-letter to Trefeurig, the Welsh farming community in Ceredigion where he grew up, and where his parents found refuge from Nazi Germany. A poetic and profound study of rural Wales, Sleep Furiously paints a magical portrait of the Welsh hamlet as the population grows older, the local primary school faces closure and the mobile library resists a move into the 21st century. Intertwined with an original soundtrack by Aphex Twin, the film is soul-stirring in a way reminiscent of the touching French documentary To Be And To Have.
