THE POWER OF PRESERVATION
From 1905 to 1973, it was the sole energy source that powered the nation's largest mail-order and merchandise company. Today, the Sears Power House proudly stands repurposed as the Charles H. Shaw Technology and Learning Center and Power House High.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building was designed by Chicago architect George C. Nimmons. In 2009, Doug Farr and Associates restored it, cleverly using innovative green technology while incorporating such exciting Industrial Age elements as the 40-ton gantry crane and coal hoppers.
Once a power house...now a home for empowering young minds, the Sears Power House is a shining example of how current needs and a respect for history can be successfully fused.
