Musa Musa
Local chefs, Tom Cloutman and Matthew Wich blew Nevada County away when they showed up at the Nevada City Farmer's Market last summer with a menu that no one could resist.  They called it MUSA MUSA.  Word spread rapidly about the new food booth and within weeks they had a healthy following.  Their South American influenced cuisine reached through the blah of what we are so used to around here in terms of street food and served us a dose of the big world.  Think ceviche, Brazilian moqueca, acarje, and Musa Musa's famous plantains.  Many of us are fully aware of the resurgence of gourmet street food in large cities and yearn to have those innovative resources of divine deliciousness here.  Well, guess what?  We got it.

Born and raised in London, Tom Cloutman has been working in kitchens for nearly 30 years since he was 16 years old. He travelled and worked his way through Europe extensively before moving to California in 1999, where he met his wife  the artist Ursula X. Young - in San Francisco. His chef experience landed him a job at the head offices of Williams-Sonoma in San Francisco and work as a caterer during the late 90's dot com boom in San Francisco. Shortly afterwards he opened a restaurant in Girdwood, Alaska before moving to Nevada County in 2006. Tom was hired to create recipes and run the hot food bar at the BriarPatch when they first moved into the new premises in 2007, before going on to become a manager in the Deli department.  His gastronomic travels have taken him to Southeast Asia, South & Central America, and the length and breadth of the United States. His favorite culinary adventures have been in Alaska, Brazil, Albania, and Singapore.  He has an extensive knowledge of ethnic ingredients and is always on the lookout for new ingredients and flavor combinations to excite the taste buds. Tom specializes in vegetarian cuisine from around the world  In addition to Musa Musa, he runs the Magic Curry Kart  with founder Brian Kimball, a Southeast Asian inspired street food vendor and food product company based in San Francisco, whose products are available in select Whole Foods Markets, Good Eggs and Bi-Rite markets in the Bay Area. You can also follow him and his culinary creations on Instagram @reddogkitchen.  In his spare time he tends to his vegetable garden, makes electronic music & DJs under the moniker 2 Block Radius, and tries to keep up with his 4 year old daughter: Bali.

Born and raised in Baltimore, Matthew Wich made his way to school in Philadelphia where he learned how to really, really eat...especially street food.  He lived three blocks from the Italian Market, two blocks from cheesesteak corner & hosted lots of cookouts for the club kids on Sunday afternoons.  Matthew is pretty new to the world of professional cookery. Having always been excited by the culinary arts, he took the long road back to the kitchen, with stops in the worlds of legal administration and organic farming along the way. Matthew is half Colombian, spending most summers of his formative years traveling in and around Bogota where he learned to eat...and party. Feeling inspired to spread the flavors of his motherland, he and Tom launched the Musa Musa food booth last year to fill the perceived need of ethnic fast food at the Nevada City Farmer's Market. Besides working to expand Musa Musa, Matthew also works as a cook at Three Forks Bakery and Brewery in Nevada City.  Not to be outdone by Tom, Matthew has also been a DJ for 15 years.  I suggested DJ SandWICH as a moniker, but I'm not sure it will stick.
