WORLD PREMIERE of WARRIOR AT ODELL JOHNSON THEATER - LANEY COLLEGE, OAKLAND APRIL 3-12
WARRIOR is NOT your kids' recital! It is an on-the-edge-of-your-seat dance/theater ride that will move and amaze audiences of all ages.
Oakland, CA, February 1, 2015 The nationally acclaimed model of youth arts and violence prevention organizations, Oakland-based Destiny Arts Center, presents the world premiere of WARRIOR. WARRIOR is a movement/theater production created by Artistic Directors Sarah Crowell and Rashidi Omari in collaboration with the young artists of the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company and Destiny Arts Center teaching artists and alumni as well as well-known guest artists, most notably Nicole Klaymoon, artistic director of Embodiment Project (www.embodimentproject.org), Amelia Rudolph, artistic director of the internationally acclaimed vertical dance company, BANDALOOP (www.bandaloop.org) and Afia Thompson, artistic director of Bahiya Movement (www.bahiyamovement.com).
WARRIOR is a full-length work featuring a cast of 45 talented youth ages 9 to 18 who perform a scintillating combination of hip-hop, modern and aerial dance, theater, spoken word, rap and song, accompanied by powerful video backdrop art. This year's 22nd annual production is based on the six principles of Destiny's Warrior's Code: love, respect, care, responsibility, honor and peace. Each principle is personified as a peaceful warrior. Each warrior has an enemy: hate, disrespect, neglect, apathy, shame and violence. The show takes place in a video game called Warrior, where the goal of the game is for the warriors to defeat their enemies by any means necessary. Or so it seems at first. The warriors are lured into the pitfalls of romantic love, the distraction and obsession of social media, the horrors of racism and racial profiling, and the promise that violence can bring peace. There is the wild and terrible character of MisEducation, who uses every opportunity she can to throw a wrench in the warriors' quest. And there is the benevolent trickster, the Master of the Game, who points the warriors in the direction of true love. WARRIOR is a complex journey into the minds and hearts of a generation of young people who are passionate about making a difference in their own lives and in the lives of their communities through compassion, creativity, humor and a willingness to go beyond conventional ideas of right and wrong.
WARRIOR is limited to just six sell-out performances Friday, April 3rd & Saturday, April 4th at 7:30 pm AND Friday, April 10th at 7:30pm and Saturday, April 11th at 2:00pm and 7:30pm, and Sunday, April 12th at 5pm at the Odell Johnson Theater at Laney College, 900 Fallon Street, Oakland, 94607.
