Quartango
Each member of Quartango is a virtuoso in his own right; together they make amazing music. In their own inimitable style, they take their Spanish oriented music way beyond the usual with brilliant arrangements of old and contemporary, and explore other genres, from jazz and opera to waltzes and jigs. Their music ranges from the intense, almost ferocious to elegant, sensual melodic phrases and lush harmonies.
René Gosselin, double bass and artistic director, fronts Quartango and is praised by critics for his incredible bowing technique and pizzicato as well as an upper register sound that is particularly round and sweet. His comic side delights audiences as he makes spicy comments and moves with the music, especially in the fast passages.
Denis Plante plays one of the famous doble A series bandoneóns. His unusual career as a performer and composer makes him the bandoneón artist in Canada, and an exceptional figure in contemporary tango on the world scene. A spiritual son of Astor Piazzolla, he has enriched the bandoneón repertoire with dozens of works capturing the essential pulse of the tango.
Pianist Stéphane Aubin is an author-composer, performer, arranger and musical director with many recent musical and theatrical appearances to his credit. An accompanist and vocal coach to many artists, he also composes for children's theater. Performing he exhibits impressive, flawless finger work with glissandos, huge chords and delicate caressing of the notes.
Atoine Bareil was initiated to violin at age 6 and received a strong musical education. He has shared stages with many prodigious artists and is a recognized arranger receiving positive reviews for his arrangements of Frank Zappa's music. His equally at home in every musical stylesoaring melodies, clean harmonics, pizzicato and incredible bowing.
Quartango has charmed audiences across Canada and the United States, and from Ankara and Tokyo to Taipei, Paris and New York, where they shared the stage at Carnegie Hall with the New York Pops. More recently, they performed in Guatemala and with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. They stole the show at Carnegie Hall, in performance with the New York Pops, and have also appeared with the National Arts Centre Orchestra and Montreal's Orchestre Métropolitain. In 2008, Quartango performed four outdoor concerts with the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, winning the hearts of some 40,000 people with their contagious charm.
