Founded in 1978 by Yuriko Doi, Theatre of Yugen has invested for over three decades in artistic exchange aimed at erasing perceived divisions between people. Our core value is a Japanese artistic notion called yugen, which describes a state of inner beauty and vibrancy perceived with all the senses, and which gives our work a distinctive style and provides a unique experience for our audience. Now in our 36th Season, the company has gained international recognition for both celebrating tradition and invoking experimentation. Founder Yuriko Doi was born and educated in Japan, studying Noh, Kyogen, and Western theater before coming to the United States as a graduate student. From the beginning, she recognized that the fusion of Asian performance styles with Western theatrical practices was a powerful vehicle for expressing bi-cultural identity and cross-cultural encounters.
For 23 years Theatre of Yugen has resided in and managed NOHspace, our venue in the historic Project Artaud in the heart of the Mission District in San Francisco. With our production offerings, presentations, and touring engagements, Theatre of Yugen at NOHspace serves thousands of audience members and dozens of artists annually, reaching out to Asian American communities as well as the broad range of ethnicities and ages that live in the Bay Area. As of July 1, 2014, Theatre of Yugen has welcomed Tanroh Ishida as the new Artistic Director. Theatre of Yugen sees Tanroh's appointment as an opportunity to move the Company into a new era of fresh innovative thinking and management, a significant moment in which to shift goals to cultivate new vision, audience and possibilities for the future. Under Tanroh's artistic vision the organization is determined to pursue its plan to renovate NOHspace to be one of the Mission district's leading venues, one that enriches the entire community through partnerships and collaborations. Theatre of Yugen has the amazing opportunity in the upcoming year to work with consultants from the award-winning design firm IDEO, at an unbelievable discount, on planning the desired renovation. Theatre of Yugen is also currently planning a national tour of Yuriko Doi's production of Mystical Abyss To Colorado. The tour will include a presentation by Cleo Parker Robinson Dance in Denver, CO; by Colorado State in Fort Collins, CO; and a residency at Colorado College in Colorado Springs.
