For the uninitiated, Session Americana are a who's who of the Cambridge roots music scene sitting tightly around a small cafe table, ambient mics tuned to catch the whole sound of the voices and instruments. A suit-case drum kit, an old electric bass, a bunch of acoustic instruments, a field organ: This format feels very theatrical and though the musicians face each other, the audience feels drawn into the circle by the warmth, joy and camaraderie that emanate outwards by the all star cast of characters seated around the table.
It's just this joy and spontaneity that's kept those in the know filling local clubs week after week of their long running residencies, most recently at the Lizard Lounge. You're never sure what the next song might be or who might join them at the table. Set lists are written and discarded. A harmonica driven blues stomp that gets the whole room shouting is followed by a Hank Williams tune delivered in a way that makes you so lonesome you could cry.
Whatever happens next though, there's the feeling that you don't want to miss it. Frequent guest Bill Janovitz of Buffalo Tom puts it this way: "They draw everyone in. Every set is that magical night at the campfire that you experienced when you were a kid and never forgot; it stayed with you and made you want to play music, to share conversation and drinks and you wished it would never end. It was one of those fleeting moments of Zen clarity in life when you realize: this is what it's all about. Going to a Session American night is a night of communion. Everyone there wants to share the warmth from their campfire." It's this unflagging honesty in the performance that's earned them high praise for their most recent CD "Diving for Gold," a Boston music award, numerous accolades in the press and rabid fans all over the Northeast. Following a recent show in New York, David Greenberger wrote "Their camaraderie and interplay are all very real - a world class outfit. I'd give them 100 miles. That is to say if they're playing within 100 miles of your home, you drive there and are grandly rewarded for your effort."
