Comedy Returns to El Rio! (Mon, Aug 9)
Kung Pao Kosher Comedy Presents... Comedy Returns to El Rio!
Every 2nd Monday of the month @ 8pm at El Rio. The next show is Monday, August 9th.
Comedian/comedy producer, Lisa Geduldig, (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy) began her stand up comedy career 21 years ago at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. She strives to produce multicultural, multi-everything comedy shows with the variety of shows she produces each year (Kung Pao Kosher Comedy, Funny Girlz, The Color of Funny). The line-ups are always a diverse cultural, gender, and sexual orientation mix, and her comedy productions showcase some of the funniest and smartest stand up comics from San Francisco and beyond.
The Monday, Aug 9th show features: Marga Gomez (headliner), Brian Malow, Lisa Geduldig, Edwin Okong'o, and Janine Brito. MARGA GOMEZ was named "Best Comedian 2008 and 2009" in the SF Bay Guardian for her high energy, proudly Latina, openly gay, slightly dorky, tragically sexy, laugh-getting act. Marga's TV credits include HBO's "Comic Relief," Showtime's "Latino Laugh Festival," LOGO network's "Wisecracks" and "One Night Stand Up," and Comedy Central's "Out There." She performs nationally as one of America's first gay comics. Marga is the writer/performer of 8 solo shows. She is a Drama Desk award nominee and the winner of the GLAAD Media Award for Off-Broadway Theater, Theater LA's Ovation Award for "Best Featured Actress" and New York's Hola Award for "Best Solo Performance." Marga's acting credits include roles in the Off Broadway and national companies of The Vagina Monologues working alongside Rita Moreno, Vicki Lawrence, Lisa Ling, and Jo Beth Williams. Selections from Marga's work have been published in several anthologies including Extreme Exposure (TCG Books), HOWL (Crown Press), Out Loud & Laughing (Anchor Books), Contemporary Plays by American Women of Color (Routledge), When I Knew (Harper-Collins), and Out of Character (Bantam Books.) BRIAN MALOW calls himself "Earth's Premier Science Comedian" entertaining and igniting interest in science. A Texas Jew now living in San Francisco, Brian began his stand up career in Austin while working toward a Masters in TV Production. Like many Jews, he also had a brief stint as a pre-med student. A life-long fan of science and science fiction, Brian has developed a brand of intelligent, imaginative comedy that takes delight in the playful use of language and is shot through with a healthy dose of science references. Astronauts once listened to his Neil Armstrong routine while aboard a space shuttle mission in orbit around Earth. Brian is currently writing for and appearing in science video essays for Time Magazine's website, www.time.com. His clean, energetic style has also made him a favorite for corporate clients such as Dell, Apple, and 3M. Brian serves on the advisory board of the San Diego Science Festival. He likes to photograph insects: www.insectpaparazzi.com - and his photos have appeared in magazines including Natural History Magazine. Brian has appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Discovery, A&E, and Tech TV. www.sciencecomedian.com

EDWIN OKONG'O is a Kenyan-born award-winning journalist, humorist, satirist, and documentarist. He is one of only a handful of African-born comedians in the United States who have defied conventional wisdom to venture into the business of humor. With 20 years of life experience in Kenya and more than 15 in these Unforgiving States of America, Okong'o brings a unique perspective to the comedy scene. He was a finalist in the 2003 San Francisco International Comedy Competition and has served twice as a judge in the contest. His most recent project is a comedy series called "Africa Laughs," which will air on the Africa Channel this fall. JANINE BRITO started doing standup comedy in St. Louis and has performed at clubs and theaters throughout the US and Hong Kong. Now a rising star on the San Francisco comedy scene, she is a regular at the Punchline, winner of the 2009 SF Women's Comedy Competition, and recipient of Rooftop Comedy's 2010 Silver Nail Award. According to fellow comedian, W. Kamau Bell "Janine Brito is a sarcastic, snarky smart bomb of comedy funk straight from the 80's. She is relentlessly intelligent, cute, and above all screamingly funny."
